Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  3. Condensed Library files containing only lines with Word List words

When you open a Library file, words from the Word List are underlined in green. I like that. It would be helpful to be able to save an additional condensed version of that file, containing only lines that have underlined words. That would then let the user review just the text of an article containing words in the Word Lists. I delete words from the Word List that I now know, so the condensed version would show just the sentences with words I need to learn. I am doing that off-line with Word List exports, but I think it would…

  4. Word List Search fails on extra "blank space"

If you copy and paste a word into Search in Word List, it can often come with an extra blank space. If you hit Enter before removing that blank space, the search fails. Perhaps the search word can be trimmed before the search. Very minor issue.

  5. Save Word List export preferred format

I find that I almost always export my Word Lists in the same format, which is seldom the default format. Would it be possible for each user to set their preferred export format, or for Readlang to remember the last format used?

There is a similar request here called "Allow Saving of Word Export options as templates, but it contains no detail. I think having just a single default format per user is better.

  6. Notes area

I wish there were a place to write translational or study notes, like a "sand box" or "scratch pad." Maybe not in the text itself, but maybe like the parallel text idea, or in a pop up note. My purpose is to jot down my ideas for how I'm understanding a text, including idioms, or asking for help from native speakers. I can't quite place such notes in the flashcards, and complex meanings can't be fully captured by dictionary definitions. So there really is nowhere else to keep a scratch pad of ideas, translations, or idioms relative to a specific…

  7. Focus on verbs

Verbs are critical. Yet they are often very difficult to master, particularly abstract verbs. Verb conjugations are especially difficult, especially in irregular verbs. Quite a few Readlang suggestions and requests have addressed verbs, such as separable verbs in German and Dutch. I think it would be very helpful to have a way to focus on verbs in the text itself, not necessarily in flash cards, etc. Perhaps it could be a toggle on/off option to highlight verbs and their auxiliary verbs and separable parts. An additional feature could be a right click on highlighted verbs to bring up a pop-up…

I agree this would be great. But implementing it for all the supported languages would be difficult.

I currently rely on Google Translate to do the hard work of translating and Readlang itself isn’t actually aware of which words are verbs, nouns, etc.

It’s unlikely I’ll be able to add this any time soon.

  8. readability levels

Here are some other algorithms for calculating readability. Same idea, different implementations.

  9. to modify the spaced repetition algorithm

I feel that the algorithm is too optimistic compared to my learning capacities. There's a flash card i reviewed recently : Got it wrong the first try because i didn't remember very well, than got it right the second try... Now the next review will be in 50 days !!! Almost two months !!! So my suggestion for the algorithm simply is to "punish" harder when you're wrong. Cut the next review delay in half for example when you failed putting the correct answer once. That's a nice tool anyway. Good job !

  10. to add the possibility to import movie subtitles, e.g. in the srt format.

Since subtitles to movies are available online for various languages it would be good to consider them seriously here as a useful source. It is indeed possible even now to import text subtitles, however, it would be nice to see only the text on the screen and not the time marks. It would be also useful to have the possibility to import subtitle for two languages (one you know and one you learn), and see the two at the same screen, one by one.

And, a native Android application would be nice...

  11. Learn words according to list or to CEFR levels (A1,A2, B1...)

Algorithme to suggest you texts according to the list of words you need to learn. For example, you are going to pass A2 exam, so readlang could show the text with the words you've not mastered yet which are required on this A2 level so one could be sure to know them all.

For people who have to prepare for a certain exam it would be really useful!

  13. Soundcloud

I love the YouTube linking. Ingenious tool. Very helpful. Can I say more? I'm just starting to use this in school as a teacher, so I'm thinking of a lot of potentials here, and I'm an avid language learner myself and have already started making materials for myself.

Here is my question. Is something similar to the YouTube linking possible with Soundcloud? As I make materials for my students, it is easier to just make an audio recording of a story, for example, than a video. I just record at my desk with Audacity (including minor audio edits), and then…

  14. problems with sign in

I love your site and want to purchase but there is a problem with your sign in. I created an account to log in by email. When I go to sign on again is reads sign on through google and will not accept my password. I try to re-register but the system tells me someone is already using that email and pass word. I was going to pay today but not now until the sign in problem can be corrected.

  16. Enable saving the text with the translated words still visible, as a document for offline review.

I would like to be able to save the text with the translated words still visible as a document, so that I can reread and review it offline, or print it out. I've been saving the onscreen text as screenshots so far, but a document format would be more convenient.

  18. to make learning language using the same language possible.

For advanced learners, like me, I want to be able to see the detailed translation of an English word using English, just like what Google does when you enter "define XXX". I would certainly subscribe to premium if this feature is possible.

  19. Sort by reverse frequency

I like to sort my words by frequency or usefulness and eliminate those words that are least common before I spend the time working on the flash cards and beginning to practice them. Because I want to compare the frequency of these new words to the total set of words that I have flash cards for, I have to use a list that contains all of my words. I takes a large number of clicks to reach the end of the list. It is easy to get to the beginning of the list, as all I have to do is…

Do you mean you can’t close the Web Reader Chrome Extension?

You need to click on “Menu → Close” and the tab will re-load without the Readlang Web Reader.

    Hope that helps
