Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  1. Flashcard statistics/setting

Would it be possible to enhance flashcard statistics with e.g. how many words I'm supposed to review today i.e. to keep reviews and the new words apart. If I have no time to study them today, I'd just review the old ones to keep them alive in my head. After my reviews if I had more time, I'd start to learn new words.

    Cheers

  2. Allow for annotations of texts

For words with multiple meanings, or words that have a specific meaning based on their context, or for proper nouns. It would be helpful for native speakers to annotate the meanings of these words, instead of just giving the generic dictionary definition.

  4. some English to Arabic words are wrongly translated.

I do suggest adding a button whereby users flag those words for your review.
By the way the application is great and I find it very interesting.
    Good Luck.

  6. Options to customize word list

It would be more convenient to have an option of opening dictionary in word list on the right side of the list instead of inside the list. I use a laptop computer and have space on my screen, but still have to scroll and scroll down to read other translations of each word, and then scroll back up. Very inconvenient and counterproductive, especially on a laptop, where there is no touch screen.

  7. Sync days with timezone

Hi, i realise that the chart that shows that number of words i've revised on each day to be based on some US timezone (i live in Asia). Is it possible to add the option to select a timezone of my choosing?

The way it’s meant at the moment to work is use the timezone that your browser thinks it’s in, and then use 4am in your local time at the cut-off between each day.

It’s very possible that there’s a bug that I haven’t noticed, since I’m almost always in GMT or CET.

Please check that your computer is set to be in your current local timezone. You could do this by visiting this page: http://steveridout.github.io/mongo-object-time/ and letting me know what it says at the top of the second green box, e.g. mine says Time (UTC+2), in Asia it should be + a larger number.

If you still think there’s a bug, let me know and I’ll investigate.

  8. Is there a way to select the way (from..to) to practice ?

I just want to learn from Original language to Learned language.

I do not want Readlang to ask me cards from Learned Language to Original language.

Is there a setting to da that ?

    Thanks

    Luca

    Hi Luca,

Readlang works as follows for each flashcard:

    1. First time you see it, it asks you to translate from target language → first language, since this is the easiest.

    2. After you get that correct once, it will ask you to translate from first language → target language.

    3. If you ever respond “No” to the “Did you remember?” prompt, or if you type an incorrect answer in the typing mode, it will fall back to asking you to translate target language → first language. (If you respond “Almost”, it will ask you again to guess the target language)

I hope that makes sense. If you keep correctly guessing a word it will behave as you want. If you still feel the need for a setting let me know.

  9. Question on simplified and traditional Chinese characters:

Not sure if you're aware that some text passages I posted in my page have full form/traditional Chinese characters (Taiwan, Hong Kong) and some have simplified characters (PRC). Only some characters have been simplified (a few thousands), but they include many common ones.

I think most students remember and type simplified characters but not traditional (which we generally try to avoid)

If one adds the simplified form to the card in the "Alternative" box for a traditional character, would that upset your database?

Since your dictionary works so well with both forms, I would suggest having 2 boxes for the…

  12. Change the translating platform please!

I just wanted to say I really dislike the change that you all made recently to how you see the translated words. I know the site it's still very new and are experiencing new things to make it look better but the problem I have with it and a big reason what attracted me to the site was that when I translated something I could see that translation within that 'block' of the word. There was no annoying popup or anything changing about the page so therefore I could read quicker without interruption. This new design you have where the…

You can change this setting from the reader sidebar, within the AA tab. Or from the Web Reader menu: set Translations Replace in the Appearance Settings.

Hope that helps. (Sorry for the change of style – I meant to change the default for new users and not existing ones like yourself, luckily it’s easy to change back :-)

  16. Why not change the English word by a synonime in English, too?

People studying english at a certain level might not know the meaning of a Word but they could perfectly know one of its synonimes. I find that sometimes the translation of the English Word into Spanish is not very accurate.
For instance, the Word "trigger" in my last Reading didn't mean "gatillo" but something like shooting. Excuse me if I am mistaken.

  18. this is the bomb

many of the flashcards are not technically correct, making it hard on a person trying to learn grammer. Crowdsourcing is great, but if someone has a better translation, there should be a method they can submit it for review. I think Audiria does this.

They aren’t always correct, that’s true.

Readlang is designed for intermediate and advanced learners, not complete beginners. Users are expected to understand the basic grammar enough to realise when a translation isn’t completely correct, and in that case, they should edit the flashcards – in the edit panel a dictionary will be shown which should help with this.

Crowsourcing is a great idea and I’ve been thinking about this for ages, but implementing it well is very tricky so can’t promise anything.

  19. Read to me.

Learning a language through reading is spectacular but it is missing someone reading to me out loud so that I can hear the correct pronunciation without having to go to each individual word pronunciation on your flash card tab.

  20. I'd like to have the options which give the possibility to block the learning the words from chosen text or books and studying all the word

I'd like to have the options which give the possibility of:
    - postponing learning words from chosen texts or books (blocking text or book)
    - studying all the scheduled words at once without dividing them for 8/15 or 25.
