Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  2. Glad you've got Thai. :-)

Love how I can easily make flashcards from things I'm reading online! Helps me review my reading.

Are you going to be able to increase the Thai support level? Move out of beta?

The missing parts that I would need to have Thai out of beta are:

    1. Word detection – Readlang should know where each word starts and ends so that you don’t need to manually select each word yourself. This is easy when the languages use spaces, but with Thai, Chinese and Japanese, it’s tricky.
    2. Word frequency lists – to be able to prioritize your learning to learn the most frequent/useful words first.
    3. Text-to-speech audio – to hear the pronunciation of words

I can’t see these happening very soon, since I’m focussing on improvements that benefit all the languages at the moment. One day when Readlang is more successful and has more resources I hope to be able to improve Thai support.

  3. use European Portuguese, too!

it's disheartening to hear Brazilian pronunciation when being tested on material from a Portuguese newpaper article.

It's also a sore spot for the Portuguese, not to mention speakers from Cabo Verde, Mozambique and other places, who feel and are marginalized due to the prominence of Brazil. They are simply out-numbered.

Very good point – I checked my stats to see if more of my users are learning Portuguese from Europe or the Americas as very crude indication of whether they’d prefer a Portuguese or Brazilian accent – turns out to be a fairly even split. I’ll have a look into this and may well add an option to the settings. Will keep you updated if I implement anything!

This is pretty difficult to implement, but it’s not too hard to upload the contents of a Word document yourself:

    1. Open the document in Word
    2. Select all the text
    3. Right click and copy it to clipboard
    4. Open Readlang’s upload page in your browser: http://readlang.com/upload
    5. Paste the text

The same thing will work for many (not all) PDF files using Adobe Reader or another PDF viewer.

  5. renewal

Could you make it possible for subscribers to renew for a year but without then having automatic renewal for subsequent years?

  6. Add virtual keyboard to typing mode

It would be great if you had an option for a virtual keyboard in typing mode (the way Google Translate supplies one), in the foreign language for folks who don't have an actual keyboard in that language. Screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/DOcq62Z3

  9. add "open in new tab" to Readlang Web Reader

When using Web Reader I'd like to have the option "open in new tab".
Foe example if I'm on the table of contents page of a book I don't want to lose this page by clicking only "open".

  10. Create a section for the "context.reverso.net" source

Words, translated via the Readlang extension on various websites, that appear on the word list are inked to the "context.reverso.net" source. But there's no way to filter them from the rest of the vocabulary, like the way its possible with readlang content.
thus its harder to edit them out when you dealing with a huge pile of translations.
It'd be great if there were a source filter for these words

  11. I read your post on Medium

I like this idea for sure. I think I'd use this tool occasionally.

    Here's my use-case:
I am Turkish. I speak and write English fluently and have no issues whereas my Spanish is not as good as my English.

I started learning Spanish years ago in University and always continued practicing. I am fluent in speaking and reading, but I always have issues not knowing some words.

Whenever I meet a Spanish speaking person, I practice with him/her. In web, I bump into Spanish articles and read them along.

I think I am a good fit for the free model…

Do you mean you can’t close the Web Reader Chrome Extension?

You need to click on “Menu → Close” and the tab will re-load without the Readlang Web Reader.

    Hope that helps

  13. to make learning language using the same language possible.

For advanced learners, like me, I want to be able to see the detailed translation of an English word using English, just like what Google does when you enter "define XXX". I would certainly subscribe to premium if this feature is possible.

  16. Soundcloud

I love the YouTube linking. Ingenious tool. Very helpful. Can I say more? I'm just starting to use this in school as a teacher, so I'm thinking of a lot of potentials here, and I'm an avid language learner myself and have already started making materials for myself.

Here is my question. Is something similar to the YouTube linking possible with Soundcloud? As I make materials for my students, it is easier to just make an audio recording of a story, for example, than a video. I just record at my desk with Audacity (including minor audio edits), and then…

  19. Notes area

I wish there were a place to write translational or study notes, like a "sand box" or "scratch pad." Maybe not in the text itself, but maybe like the parallel text idea, or in a pop up note. My purpose is to jot down my ideas for how I'm understanding a text, including idioms, or asking for help from native speakers. I can't quite place such notes in the flashcards, and complex meanings can't be fully captured by dictionary definitions. So there really is nowhere else to keep a scratch pad of ideas, translations, or idioms relative to a specific…

  20. Save Word List export preferred format

I find that I almost always export my Word Lists in the same format, which is seldom the default format. Would it be possible for each user to set their preferred export format, or for Readlang to remember the last format used?

There is a similar request here called "Allow Saving of Word Export options as templates, but it contains no detail. I think having just a single default format per user is better.
