Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  1. Add option to change text alignment from "justified" to "left"

It would be a nice option (not essential, but maybe in the future)

  2. The book should be opened at the page it was when we last closed it

It seems that a book is opened at the farthest page that has been seen, but it seems more natural to open it at the page it was when we last closed it.

Right now, I have a book read at 3% but I only actually read around 1% (I guess I just passed some pages to see what was coming and got around the 3% mark).

That makes it really annoying to start reading that book, as every time I open it I go directly to the 3% mark and I have to manually turn pages back until the…

  3. normalize Unicode in typed answers

Unicode's a great standard, but doesn't resolve all problems. Some diacritics have various representations, which messes up comparisons. E.g., the two strings below are different:
    অলৌকিক কাজ
    অলৌকিক কাজ

One starts "অ ল ে ৗ"; (ending in ৌ) the other starts "অ ল ৌ" (ending in ৌ), the latter being a "composed" form of the former.

The answer is apparently to use Unicode normalized forms, as documented (at least for a start) at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode_equivalence. Of course, http://rishida.net/tools/conversion/ is great for peering into Unicode streams.

Glad you’re enjoying the site :)

Renaming is possible. You need to:

    1. Open the text to read
    2. Click the button at the top right to open the sidebar
    3. Click the “Edit” tab at the top
    4. Enter a new name (you can edit the document text here too)
    5. Click “Save”

To delete a text, open the Library → My Texts tab and click the “Delete” button to the right of the text you wish to delete.

I have a paypal account but when i use your payment method and i get into paypal it asks me for card details..I use paypal to avoid putting in card details on websites if possible.Anyway the point is it does not switch me directly into my account with paypal.Maybe that is something to look into.Is your email steve@readlang.com if so then I can go directly to paypal myself and pay. Finally a few months ago I signed up for a couple of months with Fluencia and the process was with paypal and it switched me directly into my paypal…

  7. Maintain the selected tab in Library

When changing from 'Library' to 'Learn' and back, the selected tab in 'Library' is always set to 'Public', which can be both misleading and annoying.

I added my first book, went to 'Learn' and back to 'Library' and I was surprised because I didn't find my book (you still see the 'Add New Book' button and the 'Click the "Add New Book" button to get started.' message). I thought something went wrong and re-added the same book again and then I was redirected to 'Bookshelf' tab and saw that I had two books.

That would be more clear just maintaining…

    Hi Oliver,

It’s not obvious I know, but there are already keyboard shortcuts for the flashcards page:

Enter – Reveal answer & next card
    1 – Not at all
    2 – Almost
    3 – Yes, just
    4 – Perfectly

I really should communicate this to users as they are learning to use the site.

I’ll have a think about adding some visual indication of your progress on each word to the flashcards. I need to think about how to do it in a way that is clear and not confusing.

I’ve been considering replacing the current four possible responses with a more simple “Yes” / “No” or “Remembered” / “Didn’t Remember”. It probably won’t affect the behaviour of algorithm that much and will be less for the student to think about.

    Steve

  9. sort by level

I think it will be useful to be able to sort by level. Be able to pull all the A1 level resources or A2, or B1. That will make it easier to find material that is right for the level of a certain student

    Now you can permanently delete:

    1. Select the “Deleted” group
    2. Select some or all words
    3. Click Action → Permanently Delete

Hope this is useful for you. If you have other suggestions please let me know.

  13. Search the Public Bookshelf by difficulty level.

It would be nice if I could filter or at least sort the pubic bookshelf by difficulty level (i.e., the CEFR designations). I would get a lot out of being able to easily see what other people have found out there that is at my level.

  14. group words to learn by text of origin

suppose you want to read a book to learn a new language, as you translate unkownn words they are added to your word list, and when you study they will come up following the SRS principles; however, other words from other texts will also come up. This is inconvenient if all you want to do is being able to understand a particular book.
Hopeful this is not too bothersome, otherwise this is a great website.

  15. offer an export field that uses Anki's cloze syntax

The Text field of Anki's built-in cloze note type uses a format quite similar to "Context (with original word)", but with {{c1:...}} instead of [[...]] around the original words.

Currently I fix my exported word lists manually in Notepad each time, but if it's a not too high effort, if would be great to get the correct format directly from Readlang.

    More info: http://ankisrs.net/docs/manual.html#cloze-deletion

I’ve added 2 export fields using the Anki cloze format:

    Context (Anki cloze):
    {{c1::original word}}

    Context (Anki cloze with translation):
    {{c1::original word::translation}}

TIP: If you only export one field, be careful to ensure that Anki doesn’t use “:” as a field delimiter when importing.

Please let me know if this works well for you or not.

  16. Autoplay audio in flashcards when answering

If possible it would be nice to have an option to autoplay audio when answering flashcards. When answering flashcards generally I am testing that I know the meaning and pronounciation.

    Thanks

    This feature is now working.

Premium users can enable “Speaking Mode” from the settings page: http://readlang.com/preferences

Once enabled, you will hear audio pronunciation every time:

    - You translate a word or phrase
    - The side of the flashcard in your target language is displayed

This works for the following 17 languages: Catalan, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish

Please let me know what you think of this and how it works.

    Some notes:
    1. It doesn’t work when using the Web Reader on iOS.
    2. When enabled, you’ll see an audio icon at the top of the reader page and during a flashcard session allowing you to toggle “speaking mode” – this won’t appear at all if it wasn’t enabled first from the settings page (http://readlang.com/preferences)
    3. On YouTube videos, audio pronunciation will only work when the video…

  17. display a word (or character) count next to items in the bookshelf

...so that folks who like to add stuff in advance and come back later can easily find one with the desired length.

Sorry for the spam. Last one for today, I promise. :)

  19. Words lists to correspond with the text

The idea here is that when opening a text and then on to word list to see the words(phrases) from THE text that were starred before. And when working with the text, new words whould be added to the list, but when finishing working with the text only starred words will stay in the word list.
Now it's different when opening a text in the word list I see the words from previous texts which were even not starred(again too much trash that is not useful).

Words listed in the reader sidebar now always correspond with the text being read.

Favourite (starred) words will appear at the top, followed by the rest ordered by word frequency, so the simplest first.

Words translated during the current session will appear at the top of the list.

If there are too many “trash” words, simply select them by clicking the checkbox, then click the “Delete” button which appears at the top of the list.

    Hope you enjoy this improvement!

  20. Add a way to search in public database

It will be very useful to search what is already added in public database ( videao already sync )

When you for example like a band of music, it could be interseted to search in public library with word and keyword in order to see if there are some songs shared by an other Readlang user.

I would be thankful to consider my suggestion. I am very interested by your website.
I think that with some amelioration (they have many suggestion) it could be THE MUST !

I’m a bit late closing this request, since public library search was added last year.

There’s now a search box at the top right of the Library → Public section.

Note it only searches the title and author fields, not the entire texts.

This should be useful for the languages with a decent number of shared texts such as Spanish, English, German and French.
