Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  1. Translation Behavior Display Settings

    Current translation behavior for "highlight" or "underline" is to provide the translation above the selected word/phrase. This often causes a shift in the text and uneven line spacing. Implement double line spacing display option so that the above text translation does not disturb/shift line locations

  2. Enable saving the text with the translated words still visible, as a document for offline review.

    I would like to be able to save the text with the translated words still visible as a document, so that I can reread and review it offline, or print it out. I've been saving the onscreen text as screenshots so far, but a document format would be more convenient.

  3. make it possible to have split verbs as flash cards (German)

    For example, many German reflexive verbs use the form (sich) infinitive. These can mean something different than without sich. The sich declines with the pronoun.

    Further, there are splittable (trennbar) verbs in German. The infinitive form has a prefix, but in certain tenses, the verb is split across the sentence. Example: infinitive- anprobieren - "to try on" (notice it is also splittable in English). One can say, "Ich werde diese Kleidung anprobieren," I will try on these clothes. One can also say, "Ich probiere diese Kleidung an." I am trying on these clothes.

    In these cases, the two words are…

  4. Idea For Chinese to make it work

    I suggest adding pinyin on the top of words

    The main problem with Chinese is that it has no alphabet
    Adding pinyin on the top to make it readable and then checking the meaning will make it work. Check out Pinyiner on Android then you will get what I mean.

  5. to modify the spaced repetition algorithm

    I feel that the algorithm is too optimistic compared to my learning capacities. There's a flash card i reviewed recently : Got it wrong the first try because i didn't remember very well, than got it right the second try... Now the next review will be in 50 days !!! Almost two months !!! So my suggestion for the algorithm simply is to "punish" harder when you're wrong. Cut the next review delay in half for example when you failed putting the correct answer once. That's a nice tool anyway. Good job !

  6. Make "Un-star " an option in the Actions menu.

    I like to star a lot of words (up to a 100 at at time), but then I have to un-star each one by hand. It would be great if I could un-star them in one fell swoop.

    By the way:

    Book Shelves: LOVE THEM!
    New review options: LOVE THEM!

    Many thanks for the great tool, which I continue to recommend every chance I get.

  8. Audio sync rather than only YouTube video

    My idea is basically to do an Assimil styled approach but be able to incorporate your flashcards (or Anki) with it in this way: 1) listen to the recording, 2) transcribe and sync, 3) review with flashcards and, of course, be able to click on a word to hear it individually (which I think you have as a premium already).

    So, if I could upload audio I could then use podcasts and other sources besides YT. I'd like to be able to import audio files (Mp3 would be the first choice) and sync them up just as your YT function…

  9. Allow import words from csv format

    For those of us who come from LWT or other similar systems, it would be good to be able to import our word list into readlang, including the sample sentences.

  10. Flashcard : option to write the word in my native language rather to guess it

    Under Flashcard, there is already an option to allow writing the word in the target language instead of just guessing it ;

    I would like to get the same option for the native language;
    Guessing can be a bit fuzzy sometimes, so, by writing the word, the choice of the good word is clearer than by guessing it ;

    thanks

  11. Auto-highlight saved words in the Web Reader

    Implement auto-highlighting (http://blog.readlang.com/2015/03/17/auto-highlight-words.html) in the Web Reader to use when reading any web page.

  12. Provide offline reading

    I'm aware this would be incredibly difficult, but it'd be amazing if you ever produced an app or some way to access offline. I often want to use readlang on a plane or somewhere I can't get internet access.

    Perhaps even just preprocessing the text and only allowing single word translation in offline mode?

  14. I'd like to have the options which give the possibility to block the learning the words from chosen text or books and studying all the word

    I'd like to have the options which give the possibility of:
    - postponing learning words from chosen texts or books (blocking text or book)
    - studying all the scheduled words at once without dividing them for 8/15 or 25.

  15. Link variants of the same word

    It would be nice to have variations of the same word to be linked with the same meaning. For example, different tenses of the same verb or different declensions of a word. This could also be added, for example, through the edit word window, with an additional coma separated field (like the existing one) so that if any of the variants appear in the future, it also gets highlighted and the same definition is shown.

  16. find a better translation source

    First off, google is probably the worst translator you can find. For Thai, you can only choose a letter not a word - so ไ not ไก่...several words are translated incorrectly or not at all. This website is a great idea, but translations need to be on par. Maybe open it up to the community.

    Google Translate is actually pretty good from English to/from the main European languages. Sorry that it doesn’t work so well for Thai.

    Out of curiosity, do you know of a better machine translation system for Thai → English?

  17. Ability to change the default CEFR designation

    Sometimes the CEFR designation seems off, probably because the text is short. I think it should be modifiable or allow the user to add another field with a subjective level.

  19. use another translation service

    Maybe it's better to use some other translation services like "lingvo" instead of, I suppose, Google Translate? It's good but sometimes I ought to see some different variants of suggested translations because of inappropriate suggestions that is given here.

  20. Add furigana

    I see that this has already been brought up before but If ever you guys get the resources it would be great if you could add some kind of pronunciation aid and or furigana for Japanese texts. You guys did real well setting up this site for languages that use the Roman Alphabet but with languages that use other writing systems there is no help with pronunciation.
