I agree it's not 100% perfect, and requires the reader to use their judgement, taking into consideration the context and using the sidebar dictionary where necessary.

In your example, if you just added one word around the "como", for example, if you highlighted "como yo", then it would be correctly translated as "like me".

I do take your point though, and in future I may look into ways to provide more accurate translations as well as alternatives.

@Hernando: thanks for your defence of the app - much appreciated!

Hi Richard. Did you know that you can sign up to emails reminding you to practise your words?

You can enable these emails on the preferences page: http://readlang.com/preferences (also accessible by clicking on your user icon at the top right of the page)

The email will only be sent if you haven't practised in the past 24 hours, and will contain an example question taken from your word list to get you thinking.

    Steve

Hi Richard. I'm just trying to understand your comment properly. Do you want to send bits of texts from other applications to Readlang, or from Readlang to other applications? Are you talking about sending entire articles or single sentences or phrases? Which other apps do you imagine sending from? Browser? Kindle / ebook reader?

If you want to send text to Readlang from other apps, you can:

    1. Select the text
    2. Copy it to the clipboard
    3. Open Readlang
    4. Click blue "Add new book" button on Library page
    5. Paste your text in the box there
    6. Upload text

Now you have a new Readlang document with the pasted text - although this is obviously more suitable for entire articles you wish to read rather than single sentences.

I’ve just fixed a bug where this could happen if translated words were present when chnaging page. Please give the site another try and let me know if you encounter this or any other problems.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Hi Edu. I'm having trouble reproducing this problem, does it happen predictably for you? If so, please let me know how to generate it, including which document it happens with. Thanks!

This isn't exactly what you're asking for, but I've just added a "Read Aloud" feature using synthetic voices. If your browser supports it, you'll see a play/pause button at the bottom of the reader page which, when clicked, will read the text out loud, highlighting the current word being spoken. This is only available if your browser supports locally generated text-to-speech on the device you are using.

This was only added last night, so if you have a Readlang tab already open, please refresh it to get access to the new feature. And if you notice any bugs, please let me know!

The feature is available to all Readlang users, and Premium users are additionally able to customize the voice in the "AA" sidebar tab.

Please let me know what you think!

(I also like the idea of being able to upload audio files with real human voices, and am…

This definitely shouldn’t happen and if it is it sounds like a bug.

    To be more specific:

    1. If you change your “I’m learning” language at the top of the screen, you should only see books and flashcards in that language.

    2. Your “I know…” language is not meant to change, since you only have one native language, and if you do change this you will indeed find that your flashcards have a mix of translations in different languages.

Could you please clarify what is happening for you.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I don't think there should be a problem with the method you described. It should work like this:

    - When you are in "learning Spanish" mode, all your flashcards should be from Spanish articles, and all the translations should be in English.

    - When you are in "learning English" mode, all your flashcards should be from English articles, and the translations should be in Spanish.

The problem may be if for example:

    - When reading in English you sometimes translate to Spanish and sometimes translate to Portugese

In this case, you're flashcards will *all* be in English, but the translations will sometimes be in Spanish and sometimes Portugese. Is this what's happening? I can see how this would be confusing but as long as it communicates to you the meaning of the English word/phrase it should be OK. And I highly encourage editing the translations manually if they aren't accurate to make them more useful to you.

Let me know if I've understood the problem correctly and how you'd like to see it fixed.

    Thanks,
    Steve
