transcription
I love the functionality of reading along with a video. It is great for getting pronunciation and clarity of what is being said. However, I would love to see this taken to a new level of functionality.
My suggestion comes from a program I have used called Rhubarb or WebRhubarb (https://www.cict.co.uk/textoys/rhubarb.php). Here's the gist:
Assuming there is a text that is synced with a video, I would like the option of turning the text into a transcription activity. In other words, the program would render the words as blanks (letters as underscores or * for example). Then as a person listens, they would have to fill in words, which can be verified and filled in bit by bit.
As in Rhubarb, there could be a text box for entering words or phrases, which could be searched in the text and then entered into the appropriate places. Gradually, the student fills in the text. The dictionary is still clearly important for students to guess about what they are hearing and look up words and meanings to see if it would make sense.
Again, as in Rhubarb, hints could also be given, such as providing one letter at a time. The idea is basically like the game hangman, where you enter guesses and see if they stick, and could optionally be scored based on correct guesses as well as small penalties for hints.
They also have a related game called Sequitur, which might be another great variation for developing textual fluency (https://www.cict.co.uk/textoys/sequitur.php).
