Why is there a length limit on phrases?

Readlang has a limit of 6 words per phrase for free and 12 words per phrase for paying users. Upgrading your account entitles you an unlimited number of phrases, but not an unlimited number of words per phrase.

The reasons are:
  1. I pay Google per character for the translations so if users started habitually translating whole sentences it might be unsustainable without raising prices.
  2. Words and short phrases work better for flashcards and cloze tests in my opinion.
  3. The site is designed for intermediate and advanced learners who typically just need gaps in their knowledge filled in.
  4. I find that Google Translate often doesn’t handle large, complex sentences that well, so may lead to confusion, especially for the beginner users who are most likely to try translating whole sentences.
