I really like this idea. In fact I’ve been thinking about something similar for a while.
When a text is far beyond your reading level a side by side option would be ideal. And when you aren’t struggling so much, it’s probably better to show the translation only for sentences or paragraphs as needed, like you suggest.
No promises on this at the moment though I’m afraid, I have a lot of other work to do first.

To solve the issue of too many flashcards turning up, please try the "Delete Flashcards on Deselect" mode which makes it very easy to delete flashcards while reading: https://blog.readlang.com/2023/06/09/delete-on-untranslate.html

It is also a way to get a full sentence translation without having to select everything when learning esp. harder languages so I can read faster or when sentences don't fit on my screen. There is a big difference between single word and sentence translation and I update single word translations using the sentence translation.

seconded, I like interlinear better than parallel, but bilingual or dual language text support would be great.
