Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  1. crowdsource translations and flashcards!

I will be great if could share my flashcards and people could share theirs with me. because sometimes the translations isn't accurate, and I have to add images to it. it will be great if we all use common flashcards.

  2. add "open in new tab" to Readlang Web Reader

When using Web Reader I'd like to have the option "open in new tab".
Foe example if I'm on the table of contents page of a book I don't want to lose this page by clicking only "open".

  3. Flashcards: give us the choice to hear the pronunciation after the answer is shown

In passive mode, I prefer the audio to be played after the answer is shown, as the pronunciation is part of what's tested when learning Chinese characters. This could also be beneficial for people in general who wish to test pronunciation in other languages.

  7. Convert a highlighted sentence into a bunch of words.

The ability to highlight a ten word sentence and then have all ten words in the sentence converted into ten different flashcards. Or highlight a ten word sentence and Readlang would save the sentence and the ten words of the sentence.

  8. Have every word in a document saved in a word bank.

A Readlang user could upload a document to Readlang and select an option to have all the words in the text saved into a word bank. Instead of having to click on hundreds of words; users could have the one click option to covert a document or webpage into a bunch of words.

  9. Add virtual keyboard to typing mode

It would be great if you had an option for a virtual keyboard in typing mode (the way Google Translate supplies one), in the foreign language for folks who don't have an actual keyboard in that language. Screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/DOcq62Z3

  11. Word boundaries in Japanese

It would be nice if the system could identify the word boundaries for me, so that, when I put the cursor over a word, the green highlight appears under an entire Japanese word, and not just on each individual character.

  12. Option to filter out texts with videos

Hi, It'd be of great help if you could add a filter that can allow users to filter out texts with video content. Many of the readers (like myself) need audio feedback while reading the text in order to get the pronunciation right.

As of now, its hard to go through the entire list to try and spot all the videos.

    Thanks!
    Adi

  13. use European Portuguese, too!

it's disheartening to hear Brazilian pronunciation when being tested on material from a Portuguese newpaper article.

It's also a sore spot for the Portuguese, not to mention speakers from Cabo Verde, Mozambique and other places, who feel and are marginalized due to the prominence of Brazil. They are simply out-numbered.

Very good point – I checked my stats to see if more of my users are learning Portuguese from Europe or the Americas as very crude indication of whether they’d prefer a Portuguese or Brazilian accent – turns out to be a fairly even split. I’ll have a look into this and may well add an option to the settings. Will keep you updated if I implement anything!

Sorry but the http://steamcommunity.com/ website has a security policy that stops any external scripts from running. This includes the Readlang Web Reader. The same problem happens with Facebook.

There may be a way I can work around this for Chrome Extension users but I would need to investigate further.

  15. Read to me.

Learning a language through reading is spectacular but it is missing someone reading to me out loud so that I can hear the correct pronunciation without having to go to each individual word pronunciation on your flash card tab.

This is pretty difficult to implement, but it’s not too hard to upload the contents of a Word document yourself:

    1. Open the document in Word
    2. Select all the text
    3. Right click and copy it to clipboard
    4. Open Readlang’s upload page in your browser: http://readlang.com/upload
    5. Paste the text

The same thing will work for many (not all) PDF files using Adobe Reader or another PDF viewer.

  17. Have a suspend option in word list

Sometimes you have a relapse in studying and want to start out new again on some fresh texts but not have the old words come back at you in the flash cards until a later date.

I’m thinking about changing the scheduling system slightly to prioritise newer words over older ones for this reason.

I’ve noticed this myself and also in this Readlang review Ron says that he periodically deletes all his cards to avoid the same problem: http://www.languagesurfer.com/2015/01/14/readlang-review-six-ways-to-get-the-most-out-of-this-awesome-tool/ – when I read this I knew that something needed to be fixed. Thanks for reminding me about this!

One thing you could try in the meantime is:

    1. Read a text on readlang.com (as opposed to the Web Reader) and translate a lot of words.
    2. On the flashcard page, there’s a “Study from…” selector – use this to only study words from the recently read text.

  18. Glad you've got Thai. :-)

Love how I can easily make flashcards from things I'm reading online! Helps me review my reading.

Are you going to be able to increase the Thai support level? Move out of beta?

The missing parts that I would need to have Thai out of beta are:

    1. Word detection – Readlang should know where each word starts and ends so that you don’t need to manually select each word yourself. This is easy when the languages use spaces, but with Thai, Chinese and Japanese, it’s tricky.
    2. Word frequency lists – to be able to prioritize your learning to learn the most frequent/useful words first.
    3. Text-to-speech audio – to hear the pronunciation of words

I can’t see these happening very soon, since I’m focussing on improvements that benefit all the languages at the moment. One day when Readlang is more successful and has more resources I hope to be able to improve Thai support.

  20. Creating word-lists without loading texts.

The possibility of creating word-lists by simply entering words and contexts (like any other dictionary).
