Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  1. allow Summary option to toggle between learning/native language

I really like the new summary feature!

Right now, it gives the summary in the language that I'm learning, but it would be nice if I could toggle the summaries back and forth between English and Spanish, etc.

  2. In freshcards, "enter" key can be a choice of left clicking "yes(I remember the word)"

In freshcards, wish to make the function that pressing "enter" key can be a choice of left clicking "yes(I remember the word)" by a mouse, which might be more efficient to review words.

  4. Please add an option to automatically translate whole page or text

I find having a translation above each word extremely useful. For languages that I'm a beginner, I have to translate almost every word on each page. I'd find it very useful to be able to select an option that does this automatically, and displays a translation for every word.

I'm speaking about word by word translation, like interlinear texts, and not about whole phrases. In my opinion, phrases should still be translated by being selected, just like now, but the interlinear word by word translation would make this app even more unique, there's no other app out there that does…

  5. hands-free flashcard mode

Readlang is great for when I'm able to pay attention to the screen, but I also like using ClozeMaster for hands-free learning.

I set the whole Fluency Fast Track to Radio Mode and have it read a Spanish sentence out loud (in a robot voice, but that's fine), then read the English translation, then read the Spanish sentence again before moving on to the next, all hands-free.

This is great for being able to get some listening practice in while I'm doing chores or whatever.

It might be nice if ReadLang had some sort of feature where it could go…

  6. add field for context translation?

    Readlang is already great!

The flashcards have fields for the word, the translation of the word, and the context sentence that the word was originally found in, etc. It might be nice if there was yet another field where I could also put in a translation of the whole context sentence. Maybe the Explain-bot in the side panel could provide it? (It already does sometimes, I think)

Thanks for reading and thanks for all the work you've put into the app already!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll consider this, but at the same time I want to be wary of adding too many fields which make the app feel overly complicated. It's tough to strike the right balance!

  7. Add Ancient Greek

I've been interested in Ancient Greek for a long time now, and I'd love to use your website for continuing to learn it. I'm already impressed by what I can do on your site through playing around with your Spanish and Irish language materials and flashcard system. Any possibility that Ancient Greek could be added to your website?

I'm afraid Google Translate (used for the translations which appear above words you click on) doesn't have an Ancient Greek option, so I can't add this right now.

You could try uploading an Ancient Greek text with your learning language set to Greek to see how that works. The Explain feature is also available for Greek so if the translation gloss above the word doesn't look convincing you can check to see if the explanation in the sidebar (provided by ChatGPT) is better.

If you try this, I'd love to hear how it goes!

  8. Pop Up translation without shifting the text

Please, add a pop up translation, when the word is highlighted or underlined but does not shift the text. The text shifting is crazy annoying especially on mobile devices. Overall the service is great, thank you! :)

  9. in practice in mobile view, clicking a word in the context box does not show a translation

This is about what happens when I click a word in the context of the tested word, during practice.

On desktop, the word is underlined and it's translation appears above it, just like in reading mode.

On mobile, the word is only underlined. I can send a screenshot of it's not clear.

In both cases, the word is added to the word list, so it's probably just a display issue.

  10. Back button when reading book

On Android, the back button when reading a book from the library is inconsistent. Initially it goes back to the library but if you read a few pages it will go back to the previous page and eventually to the library, but that makes it save your position on the first page that you read. I think it should just go back to the library always, otherwise it becomes mostly useless.

If you are talking about the browser's back button, then it will simply return to the pages you viewed in your current session. For a more predictable back button, please use:

    1. The top left "<R" button to leave the text and return to the Readlang home page or library page (whichever page you opened the text from).

    2. The left margin or bottom left "<" button to return to the previous page of the book.

    I hope that helps!

  11. Twitter scroll not working

The chrome extension does not appear to work well on Twitter. It does initially but if you scroll, the new tweets will not have the plugin working. I've tried scrolling first and then enabling the plugin but that does not work very well either.

  13. Auto-highlight words for Japanese

The Auto-highlight feature is working for e.g. German, but absent for Japanese. Is this intentional? It seems a relatively language-independent feature to implement, so I was wondering if it was possible to add. Thanks!

  14. slight edits of the context

Sometimes I want to slightly edit the context on the flashcard, but then the link to the original document is lost.

    I think changes that:
    - shorten the context
    - lengthen the context (choose a longer piece of text than originally automatically selected)
    - change whitespace and punctuation
    - possibly also correct typos (have small Levenstein distance)

should not break the link to the text they were taken from.

I've tested this and for me the link to the text remains even after editing the context. Please can you explain the steps you took to edit the context which led to this link being broken. Thanks!

  15. distinguish highlights with added contexts

The highlighting should distinguish by color between words added and context added to their respective flashcards.

    Better explanation is here:

  16. add "unlimited highlights" to the list of premium features

Readlang is telling me I have exhausted the 200 highlights available with the free account... this should be listed in the list of premium features (that you see when you want to buy premium and elsewhere).

  19. Allow correction of a mistyped answer (simple typo's)

there is no way to correct a minor typo after an answer was checked and found wrong. one can only go to the next card.

why not leave the card in unanswered/edit mode again...

If you got the card wrong, it will resurface later within the same flashcard session, giving you a chance to test yourself again and try to get it correct without the typo. Do you think this is OK?

  20. Audio on a card in typing mode

Smply enable the speaker button on the flashcard in typing mode(or even in guess mode)

So you can firsyt listen to the answer, then type it correctly spelled.

(the speaker button is now only enabled after giving the answer)

The idea of the typing mode in the flashcards is to test your recall of the word/phrase. If you get to hear the pronunciation then it's less a test of recall and more of a listening practice. This could be valuable too! I'm going to look at overhauling the flashcards and/or creating new learning experiences this year, so I'll certainly consider this!
