  1. Classroom applications

I really like your product. In fact, I've been wishing I had features designed specifically for use in a classroom setting. It is something I would be willing to pay a nominal annual fee for as well.

    1. Organize readings/songs into classes, such as a library associated with a particular class.
    2. A secure space to share materials to one audience without sharing to the world.
    3. Access to student progress on specific readings and vocab words.
    4. Student portal to individually find what is assigned or available to the student from the teacher.
    5. Ability to assign definitions to…

You can organize your shared texts together to share with your students using the shelves feature: http://blog.readlang.com/2015/11/16/organize-your-favorite-language-learning-content-with-shelves.html – This addresses point 1 and is available to premium members only.

I actually did create a set of features which cover points 2, 3, and 4. Some teachers actually found them useful with their classes. The problem was that as one person I couldn’t focus on this and the main product so I’ve stopped development on them. While they aren’t causing a problem I’ll leave them running. So if you’d like to try them out, let me know the email address you signed up to Readlang with, and I’ll grant you access to the teacher admin panel for you to try them out.

Point 5 has been on my mind for a while, but I never got around to it.

  2. Practice or export flashcards from specific books

What does it mean : practice or export flashcards from specific books.

  3. Quizlet

First things first. Your site is COOL! I've already added some Hebrew stuff (with my home account) and some ESL and Spanish stuff (from work).

The CSV text file export words well, however, rather than doing a download, could you just pop it out as simple text in a browser window. For Quizlet you do it as a copy/paste operation into their import function. It would be quicker and make less file clutter on my computer.

Export > copy > paste into Quizlet > import = DONE!

  4. Right-justify the Context box for right-to-left languages

Hi, I'm just trying your Readlang for the first time (English speaker learning Hebrew) and for right-to-left languages I think you should right-justify the Context box. Here's a screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/fY1KwKCHmt

  5. A very minor suggestion...

After a practice session, I think it would be great if the y value was refreshed in: ''Study from: (y words ready) All words'', just so I know how many words I have left.

    Thanks Steve.

  6. Stick with it!

    - this is an idea which i think occurs to a lot of developers (including myself); foreign language learning seems to overlap computer langauge learning
    - however most of the tools in the space are absolute rubbish; I loathe anki for example; so it's a low bar to have to hurdle
    - I think you have executed very nicely thus far; I certainly plan to use it and at this stage (15 mins in) would consider going premium
    - there's definitely room for a context- driven app like this as a companion to a structure- driven app like Duolingo (from…

    Thanks for the kind feedback!

Readlang’s flashcards do use spaced repetition – I need to communicate this better. And I have borrowed the “streak” idea from Duolingo already, although not as well implemented yet.

Flashcards work reasonably well on mobile already. The site is responsive but there’s still a bit of vertical scrolling needed while practicing that I could remove.

You can attach images although the UI is very unfriendly at the moment: https://readlang.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/743670-add-images-to-flashcards

90% wannabes – yep, this is a problem. Most users will leave, so I need a very large stream of new users to capture enough of those 10% hardcore ones

  7. Please provide "Save" feature for General Settings

Whenever changes are made to the general settings, they are shortly reversed when i reload the website in a new tab...
    its quite frustrating

  8. "imports plain text versions of websites a la Instapaper"

Hi, I was reading your post on the making of Readlang (http://steveridout.com/2014/03/22/readlang-my-bootstrapped-language-learning-web-app.html) and I found that back in January 2013 you were working on the development of "imports plain text versions of websites a la Instapaper".

This is something I have long thought that Readlang should improve. Although the Web Reader allows to import an article into Readlang, it works nothing like instapaper (or pocket for that matter). Those apps have an article view that extracts only the title and main text of the article. It would be great for Readlang to import the article like that (perhaps…

  10. Fix a bug where the bottom line sometimes gets pushed to next page

Sometimes when you click a word on the bottom row of a page to be translated, the extra height of the translation causes the row to be pushed onto a new page, or onto the next page.

It would be better if the line stayed on the page it was originally on.

    I'm on Firefox/Linux

  11. Type text flashcards only

As far as I can see, the flashcards currently combine both the original and target languages randomly (?). Because the type text flashcards are very effective, why not allow the user to choose type text only? (Or have I missed something?)

Here’s how it works (using the example of an English speaker learning French).

    1 – easy mode:
The first time you see a flashcard it will show you the French version, and ask you to guess the English translation. Since it’s assumed you know English well, it seems pointless to type the English, and it’s faster just to click to see the answer.

    2 – hard mode:
After you’ve successfully remembered the meaning of the word, the next time it is shown, it will show you the English and ask you to guess or type (in typing mode) the French. If you “Almost” remember, the card will be shown again in hard mode. If you remember “Not at all” the card will fall back to easy mode the next time it is shown.

    Hope that makes sense!

Please let me know if you still think this behaviour should be changed.

  12. Youtube songs

How can I upload a Youtube video with Lyrics? I Watch some videos but I don't know how to do this.

  13. If the translation is wrong, and I look in the dictionary, then I should be able to edit that.

I was reading Mon Oncle Jules by Guy de Maupassant and the word ''sous'' was one of the words I clicked on. I could not get rid of the definition that it means ''under''. In this story, it is the plural of ''sou'', which is a penny. How can I study that in my flashcard deck if it won't let me change the definintion

    You certainly can!

You can edit translations from three places in the app:

    1. The reader page: Open the sidebar (the little button at the top right of the page), open the “Words” tab, and click on one of the words to see the editing controls.

    2. The Word List page: http://readlang.com/words

    3. The flashcard page: the first time you encounter a card, after clicking to reveal the answer, you should see a little pencil icon which will show the edit controls when clicked.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more problems.

If you’re using the Chrome extension, once it’s open within a tab, it will keep re-opening on each new page loaded within that tab until you click Menu → Close.

Would you like it to always open the Web Reader for web-sites that it knows are in the language you’re learning?

Maybe every time you open the Web Reader on a web-site, it could add that web-site to a list, and always re-open the Web Reader whenever you visit one of those sites in future. What do you think?

  16. Move the 'delete card' button

The 'delete card' button is very near the 'next card' button (Samsung tab). This results in some of my cards being accidentally deleted.

  18. Allow sharing a text you didn't initially mark as public

I have some texts I uploaded and didn't mark public - I wanted to share a few with some people who requested it (transcripts from tv shows) - but I can't find a way to do this other than by reuploading again. It would be nice if there was just a "share" button even on my private texts

    You certainly can!

    1. Open the text to read
    2. Open the sidebar by clicking the button at the top right of the page
    3. Open the “Share” tab
    4. Click the checkbox to share the text

    Hope that helps.

(There should also be a share button next to each text while you are browsing your texts but I see that it’s not getting displayed – will look into this ASAP!)

  19. make sounds in flashcard mode more automatic

I think it would be convenient to have a keyboard shortcut in the flashcard mode that would play the sound of the presented word. Or maybe there is one?

  20. www.nu.nl doesn't work with Readlang

One of my favorite Dutch language sites does not work with Readlang.

    http://www.nu.nl/

    I get this pop-up message:

    "The page at www.nu.nl says:
Sorry but there's a problem loading Readlang Web Reader on this website."

I wonder if there are any suggestions? Thanks.

    Thanks for letting me know.

Some code on the page was interfering with the extension. I’ve updated the extension now to fix this.

Please let me know if you find any more problems!
