Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  1. Update default Korean dictionaries to Daum's small form factor

The default Korean-English dictionary is Daum, but it uses the full size form factor, so doesn't fit well in the sidebar. However, they also have small form factor dictionary that looks a lot better and still has the same functionality. I know users can customize the dictionary, but I think this would be a better default:

    http://small.dic.daum.net/search.do?q={{query}}&dic=eng

While you're at it, I'd also recommend changing the monolingual dictionary to their small form factor Korean-Korean dictionary. Not only is this more consistent with the other dictionary, but it also handles multiple words and particles and conjugations on words. The current default…

  3. How about adding F. M. S. P.?

Some words in certain languages have Feminine, Masculine, Singular, and plural versions of the same word.
This makes flash cards a little difficult for languages such as Spanish when translating with English which doesn't have Feminine or Masculine terms.
By adding F. S. the learner knows which form of the given word they are asking for.

  5. Sometimes I do not get a translation but the very same word. Even so you know the translation. Looks strange to me

I often get the same word as a translation as the English word, for example "kerfuffle".
But If I look up your word list and scroll down, I can find the correct translation. So I think, there must be an error somewhere.

  6. Custom Flashcards

As it is, I have to use Anki to make custom flashcards for the books I read, and Readland to remember my digital translations. Can we create our own custom flashcard sets so it can happen on one platform? Thanks.

  7. add British pronounciation to the flashcards and word lists

    good afteenoon,
I am learning English with your tool. Very great. Unfortunately in the flashcards mode the pronounciation is American by default and i cannot change it to British. Also the sounds on the word list are American. the only way to hear the british pronounciation is to click on every single word in the word list and click on the speaker in the WordReference window, which is time consuming in the long term.

is there any chance it could be looked at please?

I really want to keep using your tool but I right pronounciation is key.

    thank you…

  8. Right single quote = Apostrophe

Right now the index cards count

    U+2019 : RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK {single comma quotation mark}

    and

    U+0027 : APOSTROPHE {APL quote}

as separate characters. For whatever reason, some of the books I've uploaded use U+2019 instead of U+0027 as apostrophes, so it gets really annoying to have to add a "correction" for every word that has an apostrophe.

  9. Allow words to be separated at apostrophes

I'd like to be able to split words at apostrophes instead of just spaces. In Welsh, for instance, 'r is often tacked on at the end of words for "the" in front of the next word. For example: Dw i'n hoffi'r gath = I like the cat. There should be an option for "hoffi" to be its own word in those situations, instead of "hoffi'r".

  10. Support mutations for Celtic languages

Oftentimes Celtic languages, such as Welsh and Irish, will have the same word with different starting letters. I would like the option to combine contexts for the same word with different mutations.

For example: Mae'r gath yn ddu = The cat is black,
Mae cath gyda fi = I have a cat

  15. Include the Title in the "body" of an article.

When importing an article from the web, the importer does a good job of distinguishing the body of the article from the title. The only catch is, we can't actually "readlang" the title! The title needs to be just as interactive as the body text. Thanks. :)

  16. Option to switch off the video and only read

Currently, if the text has video, the video plays along with the text. But if I want to read the text only, it is difficult. I can pause the video and read, but if I click any text for translation, the video will start from that place. An option to disable the video would be great.

  17. the Japanese language course.

It appears so far--with the one I've tried-- to translate the English words into English and the pinyin words into the same pinyin words which really isn't of much help. Perhaps having an English to pinyin and Pinyin to English translation instead?

  18. Provide written tutorials instead of annoying videos.

When instructions are written, we can proceed at our own pace. We can easily go back and review a bit that we didn't get first time. We can consult any part of it at our leisure.

Videos just drone on and on. We cannot easily review any particular section. And they are boring.

  19. Words with more added contexts go first in reviewing flashcards

We know that words with higher frequency appear first when reviewing flashcards. But it would be more useful and intelligent to use the number of added contexts to a word and you review words that have more added contexts first. Because here is the thing. I read material on topics I'm interested in, and some vocabulary I see more often. And that vocabulary is essential to me more than the other, maybe with higher general frequency.

  20. Please fix the problem in Chrome of loading the Edit Flashcard Window

I know I can reload the page to allow "unsafe" scipts but it's annoying having to do this every time. I searched for a way to allow Readlang always to load these windows but it's looks like it has to be resolved on the website's end rather than the user's. It wasn't a problem when I first started using the site, so I'm not sure what changed, but it's definitely negatively effected my usage of the site. Thanks for reading.

I wonder if this is due to the external dictionary on the edit word panel?

Please let me know which language are you learning. And whether you have edited the default external dictionary.
