Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  1. Allow "I did not remember" on words in texts

When displaying words in the texts, you can click on them and select "I remembered". This removes them from the list of words to study and bumps the review time to another date.
I would suggest adding a "I did not remember" that decreases the review time to the most recent.

  2. English definition

    Hi ;o)

Nice app, I have a suggestion though: reference.com let people choose the option "English definition", shouldn't be great that your app allows to do the same? When I study english I don't like to have the definition in my native language because it forces me to make the translation in my mind whereas I want to think in english! :) I know that a lot of learners think the same (see fluent-forever; fluent in 3 months; Antimoon etc.)

  3. Editable "Categories"

I am using ReadLang more and more, and I am finding it to be extremely useful and helpful. One part that could be more useful is "Categories' for Texts. Currently the categories are fiction, non-fiction, song, conversation and other. Those don't seem to be applicable to me (except Conversation), but may be to others. It would be useful to me to be able to edit (make) my own Categories. The obvious ones that come to mind are: Phrases, Grammar, Expressions, Connectors, Science, News, Lessons, Study.

Somewhat related: As I become more and more proficient in my target language, I am…

  4. this is the bomb

many of the flashcards are not technically correct, making it hard on a person trying to learn grammer. Crowdsourcing is great, but if someone has a better translation, there should be a method they can submit it for review. I think Audiria does this.

They aren’t always correct, that’s true.

Readlang is designed for intermediate and advanced learners, not complete beginners. Users are expected to understand the basic grammar enough to realise when a translation isn’t completely correct, and in that case, they should edit the flashcards – in the edit panel a dictionary will be shown which should help with this.

Crowsourcing is a great idea and I’ve been thinking about this for ages, but implementing it well is very tricky so can’t promise anything.

  6. Why not change the English word by a synonime in English, too?

People studying english at a certain level might not know the meaning of a Word but they could perfectly know one of its synonimes. I find that sometimes the translation of the English Word into Spanish is not very accurate.
For instance, the Word "trigger" in my last Reading didn't mean "gatillo" but something like shooting. Excuse me if I am mistaken.

  9. Link the toolbar icon to Readlang on rightclick

Currently, right-clicking and then clicking Readlang Web Reader takes you to the chrome store, which makes no sense. If I've got it in my toolbar to click it, I don't need to go to the store to get it. What I do need, is an easy way to get to the Readlang page. Maybe I am just missing it, but I have been having to type the URL in to get there so there isn't an obvious link anywhere.

  10. Have an option to show all the superscript translations of highlighted words

When I am reading a text I have uploaded, I wish there was an option to turn on the superscript translations of all the words I have chosen to have highlighted. So I can glance at the text for unfamiliar words and their definitions quickly, just like I would with hand-written notes in a book. Right now, if I'm understanding it correctly, I need to click on each highlighted word individually to see the definition. I think you have to pay google translate for your translations right? So maybe this could be a subscriber-only premium feature. Thanks, Todd

  11. Change the translating platform please!

I just wanted to say I really dislike the change that you all made recently to how you see the translated words. I know the site it's still very new and are experiencing new things to make it look better but the problem I have with it and a big reason what attracted me to the site was that when I translated something I could see that translation within that 'block' of the word. There was no annoying popup or anything changing about the page so therefore I could read quicker without interruption. This new design you have where the…

You can change this setting from the reader sidebar, within the AA tab. Or from the Web Reader menu: set Translations Replace in the Appearance Settings.

Hope that helps. (Sorry for the change of style – I meant to change the default for new users and not existing ones like yourself, luckily it’s easy to change back :-)

  12. Add button to report errors in texts

    Hello Readlang,
I think this is a wonderful website. While browsing the pages, however, I came across one small mistake in the lyrics of "Let it snow": "The lights are turned was down low" should be "The lights are turned way down low".

I think it might be useful if you have this kind of reporting window available at every page because other pages may have something that needs to be corrected as many of its contents seem to be contributed voluntarily.

But this is definitely a good system. Thanks anyway!

Good idea, I want to implement something like this.

For now I’ve fixed that line from “Let it Snow!” manually. There’s a new problem with the line spacing that you’ll notice though, all the lines have a large spacing so the separation between verses is no longer visible, I’ll work on fixing this tomorrow.

EDIT – Change title of idea to “Add button to report errors in texts”

EDIT 2 – “Let It Snow!” is formatted property into verses again.

  13. Add the possibility to show only public library content with youtube video

Add the possibility to filter the public content in order to only show content that has a youtube video. This would help those interested in improving the listening skills.

  14. Support other text formats (expecially pdf) along with epub.

I'd like to be able to read text from pdfs and other documents such as web pages (and Word files too) using readlang. My problem is that, to read a pdf with readlang, a) I have to do a lot of work to get the file into the write format, and b) I lose a lot of the textual layout and this can sometimes make the text very difficult to read.

I would like to be able or enter a url of a pdf file and use readlang to help me read it.

  17. Copy to clipboard

I wonder if it would be possible to have the Readlang Web Reader copy the word that was clicked to the local clipboard? The reason for this is that the Web Reader offers just one translation whereas there may be better ones. I have developed my own pop-up dictionary environment that offers a lot more options, such as verb de-inflection, and alternate dictionaries, and multiple translations if available. It works by sensing content copied to the clipboard. In fact, putting the clicked word on the local clipboard opens up a lot of useful local applications. An option might be provided…

  19. audio for context sentences

It'd be very helpful if there were audio option that could read the sentences from which the key word/phrase was taken (jut like there's audio for words/phrases that are learned

or it could be like this that when I guess what is the missing word (translation) then the sentence would be filled in with my correct answer and then I could play audio for it

It's just a free idea; that would also strengthen our comprehension skills and keep us away from incorrect pronunciation

Automatic audio playback is now available for premium users, it doesn’t read the whole context sentence at the moment, but plays the specific word or phrase when:

    - You translate a word or phrase
    - The side of the flashcard in your target language is displayed

You can enable it by checking “Speaking Mode” from the settings page: http://readlang.com/settings

It works for the following 17 languages: Catalan, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish

Please let me know what you think of this and how it works.

    Some notes:
    1. It doesn’t work when using the Web Reader on iOS.
    2. When enabled, you’ll see an audio icon at the top of the reader page and during a flashcard session allowing you to toggle “speaking mode” – this won’t appear at all if it wasn’t enabled first from the settings page…

  20. Sync days with timezone

Hi, i realise that the chart that shows that number of words i've revised on each day to be based on some US timezone (i live in Asia). Is it possible to add the option to select a timezone of my choosing?

The way it’s meant at the moment to work is use the timezone that your browser thinks it’s in, and then use 4am in your local time at the cut-off between each day.

It’s very possible that there’s a bug that I haven’t noticed, since I’m almost always in GMT or CET.

Please check that your computer is set to be in your current local timezone. You could do this by visiting this page: http://steveridout.github.io/mongo-object-time/ and letting me know what it says at the top of the second green box, e.g. mine says Time (UTC+2), in Asia it should be + a larger number.

If you still think there’s a bug, let me know and I’ll investigate.
