Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  2. Allow sharing a text you didn't initially mark as public

I have some texts I uploaded and didn't mark public - I wanted to share a few with some people who requested it (transcripts from tv shows) - but I can't find a way to do this other than by reuploading again. It would be nice if there was just a "share" button even on my private texts

    You certainly can!

    1. Open the text to read
    2. Open the sidebar by clicking the button at the top right of the page
    3. Open the “Share” tab
    4. Click the checkbox to share the text

    Hope that helps.

(There should also be a share button next to each text while you are browsing your texts but I see that it’s not getting displayed – will look into this ASAP!)

  3. make sounds in flashcard mode more automatic

I think it would be convenient to have a keyboard shortcut in the flashcard mode that would play the sound of the presented word. Or maybe there is one?

  4. www.nu.nl doesn't work with Readlang

One of my favorite Dutch language sites does not work with Readlang.

    http://www.nu.nl/

    I get this pop-up message:

    "The page at www.nu.nl says:
Sorry but there's a problem loading Readlang Web Reader on this website."

I wonder if there are any suggestions? Thanks.

  6. Student word list...

....I thought I read somewhere that we could see the most frequent words in our students word lists. How do you do this?

    Hi Bill,

To see this, you need to:

    1. Open the Admin panel for your class
    2. Click the “Texts” tab
    3. Click on the text you are interested in

Some analytics for that text should now be displayed for you, including the top 20 words and phrases your students clicked on.

    Hope this is helpful,
    Steve

  7. Can you possibly include Haitian Creole?

    I would really appreciate it!

Done! Haitian Creole is now available on Readlang.

Look for “Kreyòl ayisyen” in the list of languages.

Currently there is no external dictionary set but if you know of a good online dictionary you can add it yourself: https://readlang.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/279539-adding-a-custom-dictionary

The other aspects that are currently missing are:

    1. Word frequency lists to prioritize words by their usefulness in the flashcard section.
    2. A public library of shared texts and websites.

Aside from that, it should still prove useful, please give it a try and let me know how it goes!

  8. Please add option to not have pop-up dialogue box when re-clicking on words

    Hi Steve,
Thank you for adding these great features -- which I discovered are even available with beta languages like Danish!

I like the mode where the translations appear over the word.

I would like to have the option for the translations to appear over any word or phrase I select.

I'd prefer NOT to have the large dialogue box pop-up every time I click on a word I've already saved.
It slows me down, especially while reading on my phone. The pop-up box provides more information than I want or need, plus I have to close it every time…

Automatic audio playback is now available for premium users, it doesn’t read the whole text however, just what you click on.

Once enabled, you will hear audio pronunciation every time:

    - You translate a word or phrase
    - The side of the flashcard in your target language is displayed

It works for the following 17 languages: Catalan, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish

Please let me know what you think of this and how it works.

    Some notes:
    1. It doesn’t work when using the Web Reader on iOS.
    2. When enabled, you’ll see an audio icon at the top of the reader page and during a flashcard session allowing you to toggle “speaking mode” – this won’t appear at all if it wasn’t enabled first from the settings page (http://readlang.com/preferences)
    3. On YouTube videos, audio pronunciation will…

  11. mouse button

    Dear steve,
when in typing mode and you have finished the word is it not an idea to have a mouse button so you can click on as well as the function of pressing the enter key.

  12. change keyboard shortcut "alt+e" into something less troublesome

In my language (Polish) alt+e stands for quite an important letter - "ę" (and I guess that for French and Italian it could be something similar). While translating the text I keep "ę" in the clipboard, but it isn't too handy. When I write a translation of a full phrase and (by mistake) put an "ę" at the end - by pushing alt+e - l lose everything I wrote.

  13. Allow an option to let additional contexts for the same word be testable flash cards.

If I understand the system correctly, additional contexts for a single word are added to a list of "additional contexts" in that word's entry my readlang database, but those additional contexts do not show up as flash cards. But isn't that how we master a word -- by hearing and or reading it multiple contexts? I suggest we find a way to make additional contexts for the same word be testable flash cards. Many thanks for an amazing tool!

  14. Only 'final' version of highlighted words be saved to wordlist

While reading a section, I often highlight a word and then adjacent words to get the appropriate contextual meaning. Afterwards I have to go to wordlist and remove the inappropriate translations (often 50% of wordlist). Is it possible that only the 'final' highlighted words in a section be imported to wordlist?

  15. Allow disabling phrase translation

I've already payed for unlimited phrase translation, but sometimes I want words translated individually - it would be nice if I could only translate phrases when I select multiple words at once rather than translating phrases when I separately click two adjacent words

  17. send reminder emails in the language last studied

I have selected two languages for learning. All my reminder emails always focus on the lanugage I am less serious about. I have had hundreds of entries in Russian and only a few in Dutch. Yet my reminder emails are coming in Dutch, repeating the same few words over and over again. It would be much more helpful if the emails would come in Russian and remind me of expressions and words I recently studied in Russian.

You can disable and enable reminders for each language separately, here’s how to disable your Dutch emails and enable Russian ones:

    1. Go to the preferences page: http://readlang.com/preferences

    2. Select Dutch at the top of the page where it says “I’m learning …”

    3. Uncheck the option to send Dutch reminder emails.

    4. Select Russian at the top of the page where it says “I’m learning …”

    5. Click the checkbox to send Russian reminder emails.

I hope this helps you, please let me know if you still have problems.

  18. Drag and drop in place of paste or choose file.

I was just looking at the page "add text" and imagining how nice it would be if we could just drag and drop any file from our computer into the box, then click upload plain text. It is a time saving feature for those who have to copy, cut and paste large material. Thanks for all you do.

It’s already possible to do this by dragging files onto the “Choose File” button on the upload page. I know this isn’t obvious but now that you know hopefully it will save you some time!

PS: I’ve tested this using Chrome on Mac OSX. If it doesn’t work on your particular setup please let me know.

  19. have a choice to translate one way

There is an check box you can click to turn of the "Spelling translation" feature. It would be nice if there were settings that we could adjust. For instance, to translate in only one way. .In some cases it would be quicker and more beneficial to be able to practice translation only from our target language to our control language.

  20. What about safari on iMac desktop?

I can't see any reference to installing readlang on a desktop iMac (as opposed to an iPad). I'd really like to use readlang. Apologies if the answer is obvious and I'm being dense!
