Does anything bug you about using Readlang? Add or vote on suggestions to improve it!

NOTE: Readlang is run by just one person, me, Steve. Even entire software development teams can't implement all the great ideas that they come up with, and this is doubly true in my case since I'm just a single person. So although I read all the ideas posted here, I can't possibly implement most of them. The feedback definitely helps inform my product decisions though, so please keep posting!

  1. Option NOT to save words, only translate.

Too much trash goes to magic word mashine, so they are saved only when they are starred(favorite).

There is now a new option allowing you to quickly delete words after translating by clicking the translation a second time. See here to learn how to enable this mode: https://blog.readlang.com/2023/06/09/delete-on-untranslate.html

(Note that if you extend an existing phrase to include extra words around it for added context, the shorter phrase will automatically be deleted so that only the larger phrase remains. Readlang has worked like this for many years.)

  2. add pictures to words from Google pictures to words that saved

Simply give us an opportunity to paste pictures in flashcards from Google pictures.

    Cards can now have images!

In the “Edit Card” panel, accessible from the reader page, Words page, and Learn page, there is an option to paste an image URL. All you have to do is right click an image on any other site, e.g. Google Image search, select “Copy image URL” or “Copy image location” and paste it into this box. Click the Save button to save this change before exiting.

This image will now appear above the flashcard in the Learn page.

I realise it would be nice to do an image search and automatically present some examples to choose from within Readlang, but this would require paying google or microsoft so I’m avoiding it for now.

Please give it a try and if you have any suggestions for improving this, either leave a comment below or add a new idea. Thanks!

  3. Firefox Extension

Please think of us Firefox users, and also do a Firefox extension like the one for chrome. Yes there is already the bookmark, but I'd like Firefox to be treated as a first-class citizen. Thanks, and congrats to such an AWESOME product :)

Intsall the firefox extension with this link:

    http://blog.readlang.com/content/readlangFirefoxExtension.xpi

    To use either:
    - Right click on a page and select “Readlang Web Reader”
    - Add the toolbar button from the Options→Toolbar Layout… menu item

If you find problems, please let me know.

    Thanks!

PS: The extension was removed from the Mozilla Add-on gallery because it fetches code from my server to avoid manual updates, which is not permitted. Still, it’s completely fine for you to use and works exactly like the bookmarklet.

  4. phrases

For subscribers....let us separate phrases. (in french) If ever i click on a noun phrase that i want to save as a flash card... I can't click on the following words otherwise it attaches itself to the previous phrase.

  5. Fix bug where the context sentence doesn't include text from the previous page.

When using the reader in Readlang, if I click on a word in a sentence that spans two pages, the captured context sentence does not include words from the previous page. I end up having to delete these cards because an incomplete context sentence is not useful.

  7. Quizlet

First things first. Your site is COOL! I've already added some Hebrew stuff (with my home account) and some ESL and Spanish stuff (from work).

The CSV text file export words well, however, rather than doing a download, could you just pop it out as simple text in a browser window. For Quizlet you do it as a copy/paste operation into their import function. It would be quicker and make less file clutter on my computer.

Export > copy > paste into Quizlet > import = DONE!

  8. Right-justify the Context box for right-to-left languages

Hi, I'm just trying your Readlang for the first time (English speaker learning Hebrew) and for right-to-left languages I think you should right-justify the Context box. Here's a screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/fY1KwKCHmt

  9. A very minor suggestion...

After a practice session, I think it would be great if the y value was refreshed in: ''Study from: (y words ready) All words'', just so I know how many words I have left.

    Thanks Steve.

  10. Stick with it!

    • this is an idea which i think occurs to a lot of developers (including myself); foreign language learning seems to overlap computer langauge learning
    • however most of the tools in the space are absolute rubbish; I loathe anki for example; so it's a low bar to have to hurdle
    • I think you have executed very nicely thus far; I certainly plan to use it and at this stage (15 mins in) would consider going premium
    • there's definitely room for a context- driven app like this as a companion to a structure- driven app like Duolingo (from the learners perspective)
    • you…

    Thanks for the kind feedback!

Readlang’s flashcards do use spaced repetition – I need to communicate this better. And I have borrowed the “streak” idea from Duolingo already, although not as well implemented yet.

Flashcards work reasonably well on mobile already. The site is responsive but there’s still a bit of vertical scrolling needed while practicing that I could remove.

You can attach images although the UI is very unfriendly at the moment: https://readlang.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/743670-add-images-to-flashcards

90% wannabes – yep, this is a problem. Most users will leave, so I need a very large stream of new users to capture enough of those 10% hardcore ones

  11. Please provide "Save" feature for General Settings

Whenever changes are made to the general settings, they are shortly reversed when i reload the website in a new tab...
    its quite frustrating

  12. "imports plain text versions of websites a la Instapaper"

Hi, I was reading your post on the making of Readlang (http://steveridout.com/2014/03/22/readlang-my-bootstrapped-language-learning-web-app.html) and I found that back in January 2013 you were working on the development of "imports plain text versions of websites a la Instapaper".

This is something I have long thought that Readlang should improve. Although the Web Reader allows to import an article into Readlang, it works nothing like instapaper (or pocket for that matter). Those apps have an article view that extracts only the title and main text of the article. It would be great for Readlang to import the article like that (perhaps…

  14. Fix a bug where the bottom line sometimes gets pushed to next page

Sometimes when you click a word on the bottom row of a page to be translated, the extra height of the translation causes the row to be pushed onto a new page, or onto the next page.

It would be better if the line stayed on the page it was originally on.

    I'm on Firefox/Linux

  15. Type text flashcards only

As far as I can see, the flashcards currently combine both the original and target languages randomly (?). Because the type text flashcards are very effective, why not allow the user to choose type text only? (Or have I missed something?)

Here’s how it works (using the example of an English speaker learning French).

    1 – easy mode:
The first time you see a flashcard it will show you the French version, and ask you to guess the English translation. Since it’s assumed you know English well, it seems pointless to type the English, and it’s faster just to click to see the answer.

    2 – hard mode:
After you’ve successfully remembered the meaning of the word, the next time it is shown, it will show you the English and ask you to guess or type (in typing mode) the French. If you “Almost” remember, the card will be shown again in hard mode. If you remember “Not at all” the card will fall back to easy mode the next time it is shown.

    Hope that makes sense!

Please let me know if you still think this behaviour should be changed.

  17. If the translation is wrong, and I look in the dictionary, then I should be able to edit that.

I was reading Mon Oncle Jules by Guy de Maupassant and the word ''sous'' was one of the words I clicked on. I could not get rid of the definition that it means ''under''. In this story, it is the plural of ''sou'', which is a penny. How can I study that in my flashcard deck if it won't let me change the definintion

    You certainly can!

You can edit translations from three places in the app:

    1. The reader page: Open the sidebar (the little button at the top right of the page), open the “Words” tab, and click on one of the words to see the editing controls.

    2. The Word List page: http://readlang.com/words

    3. The flashcard page: the first time you encounter a card, after clicking to reveal the answer, you should see a little pencil icon which will show the edit controls when clicked.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more problems.

  20. Move the 'delete card' button

The 'delete card' button is very near the 'next card' button (Samsung tab). This results in some of my cards being accidentally deleted.
